This traditional British pub game dates from 1900 and originates from a Somerset public house. The rectangular dark grey slate slab features incised horizontal scoring lines and comes with a set of polished brass coins. Signs of age include surface wear and scuffs across the dark grey slate ground. Measuring its practical scale, the board fits conveniently on a coffee table or a side table within a home library or games room today. Set in a gentleman's library or reception room, the board rests flat on any sturdy surface for entertaining guests. Players slide the brass coins across the incised lines to score points during social evenings. The traditional design and dark grey material integrate easily into period or contemporary interior settings.

Shove hapenny is a traditional British pub game that evolved from the 15th-century game of shove-groat. Players push small coins, or halfpennies, up a marked wooden or slate board into distinct scoring beds using the heel of the hand.

Traditional boards were constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany and oak, or ground flat from natural slate. Slate boards provided a smooth, level surface that reduced friction when sliding brass tokens or smoothed coins.

Authentic slate boards feature hand-incised horizontal lines marking the scoring zones, natural edge wear, and fine surface scratching from repeated play. Older examples often retain original grooved brass coins engineered for sliding.

A slate game board serves as an intriguing tactile object when displayed flat on a coffee table, leaning upright on a bookshelf, or styled within a games room setting.

Clean slate game boards using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical detergents or abrasive cleaners that could alter the surface patina or wear down incised markings.
