This George III period card table takes the form of an 18th-century English Country House piece made from golden brown satinwood and rosewood. The D-shaped folding top incorporates a dark rosewood crossbanded border enclosing a lighter satinwood field, set above a matching frieze with string inlaid detail. Four square tapered legs support the structure, showing straight vertical lines. Old stress cracks appear on the top veneer, alongside a slight gap at the front join where the two top leaves meet, contributing to the original condition of the timber. Measuring 74 cm high, 90 cm wide and 45 cm deep, this item functions well against a narrow wall space in a hallway, drawing room, or living area. The hinged folding top opens to provide a flat surface for games or display when required, remaining compact enough for circulation in smaller spaces throughout a home today.

FAQs

Originating in the late 18th century, George III satinwood card tables reflect Neoclassical taste popularized by designers like George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton. They feature lightweight, light-toned satinwood veneers often contrasted with darker timber crossbanding, clean geometric lines, and tapered legs.

These tables typically utilize a solid oak or pine carcass overlaid with fine satinwood veneers and rosewood or tulipwood crossbanding. High-grade brass hinges connect the double-leaf folding top, while the interior gaming surface was often lined with green wool baize.

Authentic period examples feature hand-sawn veneers showing slight irregularities, hand-cut dovetail joints on structural drawer or gate-leg mechanisms, and original brass flap hinges. Look for natural shrinkage lines along timber grain and uneven oxidation on unexposed underside woods.

When folded, these tables function as slim console tables suitable for hallways, entryways, or behind sofas. Unfolded, they serve as focal accent tables or small dining surfaces when paired with contemporary seating.

Keep satinwood furniture away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the timber patination.
