A Very Attractive Pair of 19th Century French Blue Ceramic Jardinièr's

19th century
Description

A Pair of Exceptional Late 19th Century French Cobalt Blue Ceramic Jardinières.

A striking and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century French cobalt blue glazed ceramic jardinières, lavishly mounted with finely cast gilt bronze ormolu in the opulent Louis XVI Revival taste. Rich in classical ornament, each vessel is adorned with beautifully modelled floral swags, ribbon-tied garlands, scrolling acanthus borders and elegant female mask handles, demonstrating the exceptional quality of French decorative arts during the Belle Époque.

The deep cobalt blue glaze provides a dramatic contrast to the warm, time-softened ormolu mounts, creating a luxurious appearance that would have graced the grand salons and conservatories of the finest French interiors. The scalloped rims, gadrooned detailing and finely chased pedestal bases resting on four ornate feet further enhance their architectural elegance.

Perfect as centrepieces, urns, or statement planters, these jardinières possess impressive scale while remaining versatile enough for display on consoles, pedestals or dining tables. Whether planted or appreciated purely as sculptural decorative objects, they bring timeless sophistication and grandeur to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Presented in good antique condition with a wonderful aged patina to the ormolu and vibrant original glaze. Very small wear hardly even noticeable and commensurate with age. Currently in Kent

A pair of 19th-century French jardinières takes the form of deep cobalt blue glazed ceramic vessels decorated with elaborate gilt bronze ormolu mounts, floral swags, scrolling acanthus borders, and female mask handles. Each piece rests on a turned pedestal base with gadrooned mouldings and four ornate feet beneath a scalloped rim, displaying a vibrant glaze in contrast with time-softened metallic finishes. Measuring 40 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, these statement planters function as decorative centrepieces on a sideboard top or console table within a dining room, salon, or hallway. They stand ready for display as sculptural objects or as traditional planters within period and contemporary interior settings.

During the 19th century, French decorative arts embraced classical revivals, leading to the creation of elaborate jardinieres designed to display indoor foliage and flowers within formal reception rooms.

These decorative containers typically feature high-fired glazed ceramic or porcelain bodies fitted with cast and chased gilt bronze, known as ormolu, or brass mounts.

Authentic period mounts display hand-chased detailing, natural surface oxidisation, casting marks, and traditional threaded rod fixings beneath the ceramic base.

Arranging ceramic urns on contemporary sideboards or mantelpieces creates contrast, serving as symmetrical focal points within a room.

Clean glazed ceramic using a soft, damp cloth while avoiding abrasive chemicals, and gently dust gilt metal mounts with a soft brush to protect the aged metal patina.
