This Austrian cold-painted bronze dog's head paper clip originates from circa 1900 in the Vienna Bronze style. The piece combines a multicoloured cold-painted metal dog sculpture mounted on a polished mahogany board, complete with visible wood grain patterns, a black nose, brown markings around the eye, and an integrated spring-loaded letter clip mechanism. It measures 27 cm in height and 12 cm in width. Suitable for an office desk in a gentleman's library, the accessory organises correspondence while adding period character to a workspace. The wooden plinth includes a brass suspension ring on the back for wall mounting options if preferred.

FAQs

Originating in Vienna during the late nineteenth century, cold-painted bronzes were cast in metal and decorated with multiple layers of unfired paint. Artisans frequently created realistic animal figures and botanical subjects, which were fashioned into functional objects such as paper clips, inkstands, and paperweights for Victorian and Edwardian writing desks.

These objects typically feature a heavy cast bronze or brass figure attached to an internal steel spring mechanism. The decorative element is frequently mounted onto a polished hardwood, marble, or onyx plinth to provide stability during use.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle wear to the paint in exposed areas while retaining original pigment in lower recesses. They exhibit fine detail in the casting, notable physical weight for their size, and occasionally carry maker stamps or numerical foundry marks on the underside.

A decorative metal clip functions effectively on a modern office desk, atop a stack of hardcover books on a coffee table, or displayed on a library bookshelf. Its compact scale and sculptural form allow it to serve as a tactile focal point within contemporary or traditional workspaces.

Dust the surface lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking the delicate unfired paint layers. Liquids, chemical solvents, and abrasive polishes must be avoided, as water and cleaning agents will permanently strip the original painted finish.
