19th century
For Sale by Opus Antiques
Description

This is a great piece of history. This little book panelled in oak salvaged from the Royal George is 'A Narrative of the Loss of H.M.S. Royal George (1840–1844)', by a contemporary publisher  S. Horsey in Portsmouth/Portsea.

This scarce book was  literally bound using wooden oak timbers salvaged from the wreck of the ship. The book details the August 1782 disaster and subsequent military salvage operations by figures like Colonel Pasley.

On the inside cover there is a label "The purchaser is respectfully assured, that the wood with which this little volume is bound, once formed part of the ill-fated ship whose history records; having been purchased from the Dock-Yard at Portsmouth'.

This nineteenth-century Victorian book from a gentleman's library comprises paper pages, leather, and dark brown wooden boards with a worn red spine, gilt lettering, maritime engravings, and a provenance label. The spine displays vertical lettering reading "LOSS OF THE ROYAL GEORGE", and the inside pages show illustrated scenes of ships, while the cover edges show frayed binding and textured grain. Measuring 11 cm in length and 7 cm in width, it is a small volume. Placed on a bookshelf, the book functions as a display item or reading piece in a home. The wooden boards are sourced from the salvaged oak of the Royal George, documenting the August 1782 disaster and subsequent military salvage operations by figures like Colonel Pasley, published by S. Horsey in Portsmouth. An interior label confirms the provenance from the Portsmouth Dock-Yard.

A relic book is a printed volume bound using timber or materials directly salvaged from historically significant sites, structures, or naval shipwrecks.

These volumes typically feature thin wooden boards milled from salvaged ship timber or structural beam wood, combined with leather or cloth spines and hand-bound paper leaves.

Authentic examples commonly feature printed provenance labels tipped onto the paste-downs, period steel engravings, and original 19th-century typography and binding structures.

Display the volume resting flat on a library table, positioned on a dedicated brass book easel, or protected beneath a glass cloche.

Store the volume in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable humidity levels to prevent the wooden boards from warping or cracking.
