Late 19th Century Chinese Painted Bamboo Rice Carrier Wedding Food Picnic Basket C.1890

19th century
Description

Late 19th Century Chinese Painted Bamboo Rice Carrier Wedding Food Basket c.1890

A wonderfully decorative and characterful late 19th century Chinese tiered rice and food carrier, dating to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1890.

Traditionally constructed from wood and bamboo, the carrier comprises stacking removable compartments held within a tall arched bamboo carrying frame, with a bound hand grip and reinforced rims.

The exterior retains extensive original hand-painted decoration in black and gilt/gold tones against a warm reddish-brown ground.

Particularly attractive are the numerous traditional Chinese motifs appearing around the different sections, including pairs of fish or carp, birds, flowers, foliage and other naturalistic designs. The fitted lid is further decorated with a charming figural scene within a landscape.

Vertical Chinese calligraphy also appears on the carrying frame, adding further interest and authenticity to the piece.

Carriers of this general form were traditionally used for transporting rice, food, gifts and other provisions and are variously described today as Chinese rice carriers, food carriers, wedding baskets and ceremonial food baskets. Elaborately decorated examples could also be associated with festive and wedding gift-giving.

The construction is particularly appealing, retaining the irregularities expected from a genuinely hand-made antique object. The interiors and undersides reveal the traditional joined wooden construction, while the bamboo framework and numerous small fastenings demonstrate how these practical carriers were assembled.

A particularly attractive example with a wonderful aged surface and extensive surviving decoration. It would make an excellent decorative feature as well as an interesting piece of late Qing Chinese domestic and folk art.

This late 19th-century Chinese tiered rice and food carrier dates to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1890. Constructed from wood and bamboo, the piece comprises stacking removable compartments held within a tall arched bamboo carrying frame with a bound hand grip. The exterior features a warm reddish-brown ground with extensive original hand-painted decoration in black and gold tones, including traditional motifs such as yellow flowers, birds, foliage, and goldfish. The object measures 42 cm high to the top of the handle and 24 cm wide, showing rubbing, loss to painted and gilt decoration, surface markings, and age-related wear to the rims and joints. It sits well on a sideboard top in a home today as a decorative feature and a piece of folk art.

Tiered food carriers and wedding baskets originated in China as practical yet ceremonial vessels used to transport foodstuffs, gifts, and dowry items during weddings, festivals, and family gatherings. Crafted with multiple removable sections, these containers allowed different dishes to be carried securely while showcasing decorative hand-painted symbolic motifs.

These containers were typically constructed using a combination of bentwood, woven bamboo, and cane, reinforced with an arched wood or bamboo carrying handle. The exterior surfaces were frequently sealed with lacquer or natural tree resins and decorated with mineral pigments and paint.

Authentic late Qing dynasty examples demonstrate signs of manual construction, such as bamboo dowels, hand-poured lacquer finishes, and authentic age wear around the base and handle joints. The decorative artwork is executed by hand, displaying natural variation in brushwork rather than uniform stencilling.

An antique tiered carrier serves as a functional sculptural element on a console table, sideboard, or kitchen island. Its warm amber tones and graphic painted artwork introduce organic warmth and historical context when contrasted against contemporary minimalist backgrounds.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding wet wiping which can loosen delicate original pigments or lacquer. Keep the piece in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and high humidity to prevent wood shrinkage or paint flaking.
