Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Originating in mid-to-late 19th-century France, these tables feature detailed wood veneer inlays, ebonised surfaces, and gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts. Designed with a swivelling or folding top, they served a dual function as wall console tables and gaming surfaces for card play.

Cabinetmakers employed mixed hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, and ebonised fruitwoods for the core structure and veneer. Decorative accents typically incorporated cast ormolu (gilded bronze) mountings, brass millwork, and interior felt or baize gaming linings.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-cut veneer marquetry, naturally aged patina on ormolu mounts, and cast bronze fixings secured with period-appropriate screws. Swivel mechanisms and interior storage compartments often show hand-planed timber and traditional joinery.

Place the table folded against a wall as a hallway console or occasional side table beneath artwork or mirror glass. The dark ebonised finish and gilt embellishments provide historical contrast alongside neutral wall finishes and contemporary upholstery.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid polishes containing solvents that can lift thin veneer work. Maintain stable humidity levels indoors to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, or tarnishing of gilt-bronze fittings.
