Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Originating in Switzerland during the nineteenth century, Black Forest furniture features detailed wood carvings and intricate marquetry inlays depicting nature, wildlife, and alpine motifs. Popularised during the Victorian era, these pieces were crafted as decorative items and luxury furnishings for European travellers.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid walnut, pine, and linden wood for the structural framework and carved pedestals. The complex inlaid scenes utilised contrasting hardwoods, fruitwoods, and stained timber veneers to create depth, shading, and naturalistic pictorial detail.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut marquetry veneers with subtle variations in inlay thickness and natural timber graining. Look for carved tripod bases showing chisel marks, authentic period joinery, and an original tilt-top mechanism featuring period iron or wooden latches.

Place the piece as a statement side table in a reading corner, hallway, or beside an armchair to highlight its decorative top. Pairing dark timber marquetry with contemporary upholstery or neutral walls allows the woodwork to serve as a focal visual element.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically to preserve the original finish.
