Antique Teapot Copeland Spode Blue Italian Egyptian Shape C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine early 20th-century Copeland Spode blue and white transferware teapot in the celebrated Spode’s Italian pattern, dating to circa 1920–1930.

This attractive and increasingly collectible example is made in the distinctive Egyptian shape, with its low rounded rectangular body, sweeping spout, tall angular handle and original fitted domed cover with decorative finial.

Beautifully transfer printed in underglaze blue with the famous Spode’s Italian landscape, depicting classical architecture, ruins, trees, figures and animals within an extensive romantic landscape. The upper border, cover and handle are richly decorated with the contrasting floral and foliate design characteristic of the Italian pattern.

The underside bears the blue printed oval “COPELAND / SPODE’S / ITALIAN / ENGLAND” factory backstamp.

The form can be identified particularly closely: a documented Copeland Spode Italian Egyptian-shape teapot dating to the 1920s measures 23 cm from spout to handle, corresponding precisely with the dimensions of this example.

The Italian pattern was first introduced by Spode circa 1816 and became one of the factory’s most celebrated and enduring blue-and-white designs.

Condition: A very attractive display example retaining its original fitted cover. The handle, spout and finial are intact. There is age-related glaze crazing and some associated staining internally, together with fine hairlining, including a hairline to the upper flange/rim as photographed and a short hairline visible to the underside. Minor surface wear and manufacturing imperfections consistent with age. Please study the detailed photographs, which form part of the condition report.

This earthenware ceramic teapot belongs to the period around 1920 and follows the traditional style. The piece is finished in a blue and white colourway with an underglaze blue transfer-printed Blue Italian landscape depicting classical architecture, ruins, trees, figures, and animals, alongside a contrasting floral and foliate border. It has an Egyptian shape profile featuring a low rounded rectangular body, a sweeping spout, a tall angular loop handle, a flanged domed cover, and a decorative finial. Visible details include age-related glaze crazing, internal staining, fine hairlining on the upper flange and underside, minor surface wear, and a blue printed factory backstamp. Measuring 14 cm high by 23 cm wide and 12 cm deep, the item fits appropriately on a sideboard top in an English country house setting. It serves as a decorative display piece or can be used for serving tea during gatherings.

Introduced in 1816, the Blue Italian pattern features an Imari oriental floral border surrounding a scenic Italianate landscape inspired by classical ruins.

Traditional blue transferware teapots are constructed from fine earthenware or earthenware pottery, decorated via underglaze copperplate printing and sealed with a clear protective glaze.

Authentic items feature underglaze manufacturer backstamps or impressed potter marks, along with clean transfer-print alignment and the characteristic weight of British earthenware.

Display the teapot on an open kitchen shelf, a dining sideboard, or within a glass-front cabinet alongside contemporary white ceramics to create visual interest.

Wash carefully by hand in warm water using a gentle liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads, dishwashers, and prolonged soaking to protect the glaze from crazing.
