Antique Regency Rosewood Brass Inlaid Card Table Console Table Fold Over Top Games Table

19th century
Description

A fine antique Regency rosewood card table of particularly rich colour and striking grain. The top shows beautifully figured rosewood with strong natural movement framed by delicate brass line inlay which continues around the frieze with elegant anthemion style motifs. The proportions are well balanced and the overall look is refined yet bold.

The table stands on a solid central column with a quadriform base finished with shaped feet and original castors. This is a high quality construction and gives the piece excellent stability while also allowing it to be moved easily around a room.

The top opens to reveal a baize lined playing surface designed for card games such as whist or bridge. In period these tables were used in drawing rooms for evening entertainment then closed and placed against a wall which is why they are now often used as console tables as well as occasional tables.

The rosewood is of particularly good quality with deep figuring across both the top and frieze. The brass inlay adds a subtle decorative contrast without overpowering the timber which is a sign of refined Regency design.

This is a strong example with excellent colour good scale and versatile use working equally well as a console table side table or traditional games table.

Condition Report

Very good antique condition with a rich polished finish. Minor age related marks consistent with use. Mechanism operates as it should and the baize is clean and presentable.

Regency card tables were designed during the early 19th century in Britain, combining functional design with classical proportions. They typically feature a swivelling or hinged fold-over top that rests flush against a wall when closed as a console table, opening to reveal a larger gaming surface.

Cabinetmakers of the Regency era frequently utilised imported exotic timbers such as rosewood and mahogany. Decorative details were executed using brass wire inlay, stringing, and gilt-metal mounts, supported on turned pedestal stems and quadform bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, original wood grain variations, and natural patina along edges. Look for period-correct brass hardware, castors attached to classical sweep legs, and traditional swivel-top mechanisms beneath the apron.

Positioned against a wall, a fold-over card table serves as a hall table or console table topped with table lamps and decorative ceramics. When additional surface space is required, the top rotates and unfolds to serve as an occasional table.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly to preserve the wood finish. Avoid placing timber near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent drying, warping, or lifting of the brass inlay.
