Description

Japanese gilt lacquer ‘Zodiac’ inro, first half 19th Century, Edo Period. The four compartment inro well decorated in takamakie, with animals of the Chinese zodiac, gathered in a river setting.

The interior decorated using the nashiji technique.

Height – 8.5 cm, 3 3 /8”.

Width – 5.5 cm, 2 1/8”.

Depth – 1.7 cm, 3/4”.

Condition – Typical minor wear to the lacquer, commensurate with its age.

An inro is a traditional Japanese portable case consisting of stacked interlocking compartments held together by a cord, which was worn suspended from the obi sash during the Edo period.
