Title: Cambridgeshire

Date of publication: Circa 1840.

Surface: Paper, engraved map with hand colouring.

Details: An original decorative county map of Cambridgeshire by Thomas Moule. Shows Cambridge, Ely, Wisbech, Newmarket and surrounding towns and villages, with roads, railways and county divisions. Decorated with views of Ely Cathedral and Wimpole Hall, heraldic shields, figures and an ornate Gothic border.

An attractive Victorian map for collectors of Cambridgeshire history or for framing.

Condition Report: Fair to good antique condition. General age-related toning, handling marks and edge wear, with some small tears and losses around the margins. Light staining and spotting in places. Reverse has age-related marks and an old pencil date annotation. The map remains colourful, clear and highly decorative. Supplied unframed. Please inspect photographs for full details.

FAQs

Thomas Moule county maps are a series of steel-engraved English maps first published in the 1830s for The English Counties Delineated. They are recognised for integrating cartographic detail with decorative Gothic Revival borders, coats of arms, and architectural vignettes.

These maps were produced using steel plate engraving techniques on paper stock. After printing the monochrome ink linework, watercolour washes were applied by hand to define boundary lines and heraldic details.

Authentic period engravings feature impression marks along the plate border caused by the printing press. The paper exhibits age-appropriate toning, minor foxing, and visible fibre texture under magnification, rather than modern dot-matrix patterns.

Mounting the map in a bespoke conservation frame with a neutral mount allows it to sit naturally in both traditional and modern settings. It works well positioned in a home office, hallway, or as part of a gallery wall arrangement.
