Beau Nash Bath has dated this French Mirrored Table Centrepiece to the 19th Century.
The long rounded form is surrounded by a delicate pierced balustrade gallery in silvered metal and raised on small decorative feet.
The three original mirror plates have developed extensive foxing and silvering loss, giving the piece a particularly attractive aged appearance. Designed as a formal dining-table centrepiece, a surtout would traditionally have supported candelabra, flowers, silver or porcelain, with the mirrored surface reflecting candlelight across the table. The pierced gallery and restrained neoclassical detailing are characteristic of the Louis XVI Revival style popular in France during the later 19th century.
