Description

This is a late 17th Century Antique Oak Gateleg table c1670-80. It is raised has shaped and stepped feet with a lower stretcher and turned supports. The patination is wonderful with it having a single drawer at one end with its original handle with split pin ring attachment. A wonderful piece.

This piece has walked through history like a time traveller observing many generations and seeing untold things; from world wars to empire. If it could talk what would it say? When this piece was made the South Sea Bubble had not yet collapsed, Bonnie Prince Charlie had not landed in Scotland, Slavery was legal and we had not lost the American Colonies.

A gateleg table is a variant of the drop-leaf table introduced in the sixteenth century, featuring hinged legs or gates that rotate outwards to support extended table leaves.

Seventeenth-century examples were constructed primarily from solid English oak, using wooden pegs, hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, and hand-turned legs.
