Victorian Illustrated National Family Bible – John Eadie – Scott & Henry – E. Pipe & Son – Circa 1880

A substantial and highly decorative late Victorian family Bible, entitled The Illustrated National Family Bible with the Commentaries of Scott & Henry, edited by the Rev. John Eadie, D.D., LL.D., Professor of Biblical Literature to the United Presbyterian Church, and published by E. Pipe & Son, Richmond, Surrey.

Dating to approximately circa 1880, this impressive large-format Bible is bound in heavy black leather with deep moulded and blind-tooled decoration, gilt detailing and prominent HOLY BIBLE lettering to the front board.

The binding is further embellished with decorative brass corner mounts incorporating attractive red quatrefoil details, while the substantial text block retains its original gilt page edges.

Internally the volume contains an elaborate colour-printed title page together with numerous full-page illustrations and chromolithographic plates depicting biblical subjects, including scenes such as Finding the Infant Moses and Daniel’s Vision of the Angel.

Of particular interest is an original handwritten family presentation inscription recording that the Bible was:

“Presented to Joseph Francis Parsons Carle and Catherine Carle by his mother on their wedding day, Jany 21st 1903.”

This provides an attractive piece of surviving family provenance and confirms that the volume was already in use by the beginning of the 20th century.

The book retains its substantial original binding, gilt page edges and decorative brass corner furniture.

Condition:

Good antique decorative condition overall, with significant age-related wear to the leather binding. The spine and extremities show rubbing, scuffing and areas of surface loss, particularly around the raised bands, corners and board edges. The original fore-edge clasps appear to be missing/incomplete, with associated fittings remaining. The brass corner mounts remain present and decorative.

Internally the pages and illustrated plates generally present well for their age, with expected toning, occasional spotting and handling marks. The gilt page edges remain particularly attractive.
