An exceptional piece of mid-to-late 19th-century English craftsmanship, this striking tilt-top table dates to circa 1870 and displays the wonderful substance and proportion characteristic of the period.
The generous top is formed of beautifully figured timber, retaining its original French polished finish which has developed a gorgeous time-worn patina filled with historic character, slight surface marks, and subtle undulations that speak volumes of its authentic past.
Beneath the tilting top lies a remarkably distinctive architectural base, departing from the more standard pedestal designs of the era. A bold octagonal tapered pillar rises from a finely turned drum base, supported by three magnificent, large shaped and scroll-carved wide legs that anchor the composition with striking sculptural presence. The ingenious tilt-top mechanism operates smoothly via its original table screws, allowing the top to be entirely removable by removing them, or tipping upright when desired, securing firmly in place through its original brass latch which engages automatically and with a reassuring mechanical certainty when lowered back down.
Practicality matches its visual appeal, as the table moves effortlessly on three original working antique solid brass castors that glide with ease across floors. Having undergone a sympathetic, professional restoration in our workshop, the piece has been carefully cleaned and fed with traditional wax, bringing the timber to a splendid lustre while preserving every ounce of its hard-earned heritage. It is presented in wonderful, home-ready condition, offering a versatile and historically rich centrepiece that is entirely ready for modern daily life.
