Fine shrinkage lines along the base veneers: natural movement in antique cut timber.
Carved foliate scroll brackets under the frieze: hand-carved decorative work.

This Victorian card and side table originates from around 1850 in the English Country House style. Constructed from mahogany with a warm brown colour and polished finish, the piece has a rectangular fold-over top that lifts and swivels over a carved frieze. The structure includes carved scroll brackets beneath the top, a central cylindrical pedestal, and a four-point plinth base with turned feet and original castors. The table measures 74 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item works well beside the front door as an entryway console, or serves as a functional side table in a living room or bedroom. The traditional materials and classical proportion suit both period properties and modern interiors seeking classic furniture designs.

FAQs

Victorian card tables were designed during the nineteenth century to accommodate social gaming, such as bridge or whist, in domestic drawing rooms. They typically feature a fold-over top that swivels ninety degrees to reveal an expanded playing surface, allowing the piece to rest flush against a wall as a console table when closed.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid mahogany or rosewood, often incorporating flame mahogany veneers on the apron and top surface. The interiors frequently contained baize linings, while the structural frame utilised hand-cut dovetail joints, brass rule hinges, and heavy timber pedestals.

Authentic nineteenth-century card tables feature original brass swivel mechanisms beneath the top, traditional hand-carved scroll detailing on the apron, and period-correct joinery. The underside often displays raw, hand-sawn timber framing and natural age patina on internal metal fittings.

When folded closed, a card table functions effectively as an entryway console table, an occasional side table behind a sofa, or a decorative surface in a hallway. It can be paired with modern artwork or lamps to create a contrast between contemporary and traditional design elements.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, or excessive humidity to prevent the timber from warping or drying out.
