A Mid-19th Century Bleached Mahogany Centre or Supper Table, c.1850

An impressive and highly decorative mid-19th century mahogany centre or supper table, circa 1850, of particularly generous proportions.

The substantial circular mahogany top, measuring 125 cm in diameter, has been carefully bleached to produce an attractive pale, softly weathered appearance while retaining the character and figuring of the timber. The moulded edge sits above a deep, elegantly shaped frieze.

The table is raised upon a wonderfully sculptural paint-washed pedestal base, centred by a substantial turned and carved column and supported on four boldly swept legs. Each leg is enriched with scrolling foliate carving and terminates in an elaborate carved foot, giving the table a strong architectural presence. The aged paint-washed decoration has a pleasingly distressed surface that complements the bleached mahogany top particularly well.

Originally conceived as a centre or supper table, its 125 cm circular top makes it equally successful today as a statement centre table, intimate dining table or impressive table for a large entrance hall.

A handsome piece of mid-Victorian furniture, combining substantial scale with unusually decorative carving and a wonderfully understated, pale decorative finish.
