Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Victorian extending dining table takes the form of a large mahogany piece with a warm brown polished finish, D-shaped ends, and a removable insert leaf. The top surface displays a rich grain pattern with visible expansion joins between the sections, rounded corners, and a moulded edge profile. It stands on four heavy legs decorated with carved acanthus leaf motifs at the top, transitioning into reeded vertical sections and terminating in brass castors. Measuring 76 cm high by 236 cm wide and 122 cm deep when fully extended, the table is suited for formal dining rooms in English country houses or large modern living spaces. The construction accommodates multiple place settings for family meals or dinner parties, combining traditional craftsmanship with practical daily utility.

FAQs

Victorian extending dining tables were designed during the 19th century to accommodate versatile seating arrangements using mechanical telescoping mechanisms or removable insert leaves. Typically constructed from high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, they featured turned or hand-carved legs mounted on brass castors to allow smooth expansion.

These tables were primarily crafted from Cuban or West Indian mahogany, prized for its dense grain and rich reddish-brown tone. The internal extension mechanisms often featured iron or steel winding screws, accompanied by heavy brass castors at the base of each leg.

Authentic pieces generally display evidence of period craftsmanship, such as hand-cut joinery, original iron or brass winding handles, and natural surface patination. Variations in wood grain across the removable leaves and hand-turned leg profiles also indicate period construction.

A Victorian dining table can be paired with contemporary upholstered dining chairs or mid-century seating to create a balanced, eclectic aesthetic. Positioning the table over a textured wool rug helps ground the dark wood tones within modern, neutral colour schemes.

Maintain the surface by wiping with a soft, lint-free cloth along the grain and applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping or uneven fading of the finish.
