Kraak porcelain is a style of Chinese export ceramics manufactured during the late Ming dynasty, specifically during the Wanli reign from 1573 to 1620. Characterised by underglaze cobalt blue decoration and segmented panelled borders, it was produced for European and Asian maritime trade markets.

Kraak ware was crafted from natural kaolin clay and painted using cobalt oxide before application of a clear glaze and high-temperature kiln firing. The items were potted with thin walls, featuring moulded radiating rim panels and unglazed foot rims that frequently carry kiln grit.

Authentic pieces typically feature thin potting, radiating panel border designs surrounding a central scene, and characteristic rim flaking known as fritting. The underside often displays chatter marks from turning, along with grit adhering to the unglazed foot rim.

These historical ceramics function as striking focal points when positioned on dark wood sideboards, set within display cabinets, or secured with wall mounts. The contrast of the cobalt blue motifs complements traditional wooden furniture as well as minimalist contemporary settings.

Clean historical ceramics by hand using lukewarm water and a gentle liquid soap, avoiding chemical cleansers or abrasive sponges. Ensure plate stands or display mounts feature padded armatures to protect the thin, lobed edges from chipping.
