Chinese porcelain ‘Kraak’ dish, Wanli Period, c. 1580. The barbed rimmed dish, painted to the centre in underglaze blue, with a scene of ducks on a river.

The broad border with lightly moulded panels, painted with panels of birds, alternating with panels of flowering plants, divided by thinner panels containing a Buddhistic emblem, on a stylised wave ground.

Painted to the reverse with panels of ruyi head symbols, and sprigs of flowers, around an unglazed footrim.

Diameter – 29.5 cm, 11 5/8”.

This Chinese Kraak porcelain dish dates from the Wanli period around 1580 during the Ming Dynasty. The piece is formed of hard-paste porcelain finished in an underglaze blue and white colour palette, presenting a barbed and lobed rim measuring 29.5 cm in diameter. The central circular roundel displays a river scene with waterfowl, enclosed by a broad border of lightly moulded radiating panels. These panels alternate between depictions of birds and flowering plants, separated by thinner divisions featuring Buddhistic emblems against a stylised wave ground, while metal repair staples secure the rim.
