Kushi refers to a traditional Japanese hair comb, while Kogai is a long hair pin or rod. Together, these paired items were used to secure and adorn complex coiffures during the Edo and Meiji periods.

Historically, these items were crafted from natural materials such as tortoiseshell, wood, ivory, or horn. Decorative embellishments often involved hand-applied maki-e gold lacquer, mother-of-pearl inlay, or detailed carving.

Authentic pieces feature traditional shapes specific to the era, smooth natural variations in materials like tortoiseshell, and hand-painted gold maki-e artwork that exhibits slight organic variations rather than modern mass-printed uniformity.

These decorative accessories are commonly mounted inside custom shadow-box frames or rested upon velvet display stands under glass cloches to protect their surfaces while highlighting their form.

Keep the items away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Wipe them gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water and chemical cleaning solvents.
