An Ebonised Arts and Crafts Ew Godwin Style Round Side Table, C1890

19th century
For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

An Ebonised Arts and Crafts EW Godwin style Round Side Table, C1890.

An elegant Arts and Crafts, ebonised round occasional table in the style of EW Godwin, circa 1890.

A superbly stylish and well constructed 2 tier side, lamp or occasional table with a tripod base and considerable decorative appeal, structurally excellent.

The 66cm tall table is supported with a tapering-leg tripod base, divided by a turned gallery middle tier and a 55cm round top.

The table is generally presented in very good, original condition which shows some evidence of use/wear to the top, showing the ebonised area to the edge to have rubbed and revealing the mahogany below.., this is quite common and authenticates its age, this can easily be resolved.

The table is sold as it is but, we may end listing and consign to our workshop to blend in the top or undertake it at buyers request, please enquire. We like the table as it is for its originality but appreciate some buyers may prefer otherwise, it is a days visit to our workshop.

Please request more photos and any questions invited.

Free collection from Lewes, East Sussex.

U.K. delivery available.

We can recommend a whole of U.K. weekly delivery service for £65, please enquire for parts of Scotland and areas of Wales.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed during the late 19th century, E.W. Godwin style furniture incorporates Anglo-Japanese influences, featuring lightweight structures, minimalist geometric lines, ebonised dark finishes, and delicate turned wood elements.

These tables were typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as beech, birch, or mahogany, which were stained or lacquered black to imitate ebony, and held together with mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces display subtle natural wear where the underlying lighter timber shows through on high-touch points, alongside hand-turned spindles and period-appropriate joinery beneath the dark finish.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa to hold a table lamp, or place it in a reading nook paired with contemporary ceramics to contrast the dark geometric silhouette.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid water or solvent-based chemicals that degrade the lacquer, and apply high-grade clear beeswax sparingly to preserve the surface luster.
