Samson Paris Armorial Chinoiserie Porcelain Vase and Cover, 1880–1890

Description

A large French hard-paste porcelain vase and cover, made in Paris by Edmé Samson, Samson, Edmé et Cie, between 1880 and 1890. The rounded body is supported on three feet and is decorated in the French chinoiserie manner, following the 18th-century Chinese Export armorial porcelain made for European clients.

The three feet are enriched with green enamelled acanthus leaves and gilt scroll terminals. On the principal side is a decorative heraldic composition: a shield between two winged griffin supporters painted in grisaille, with a gilt crest above and a ribbon below inscribed "SPERABO" - "I shall hope." The device is decorative and is not identified as the arms of a particular family. The white ground is painted with scattered flower sprays in pink, purple, iron-red and green. The shoulder has a green diaper-pattern band, red enamel details and shaped gilt ornament. Gilt and iron-red scalloped borders define the neck, cover and lower body. The domed cover has a white, green and gilt Chinese guardian lion, or foo dog, finial.

The glazed underside bears an iron-red pseudo-Chinese seal mark associated with Samson's Chinese-style wares. It is a European decorative mark, not a Chinese reign mark. Founded in 1845, Samson built a large repertoire of historical reproductions and revival designs after Chinese Export porcelain, Meissen, Sèvres, Chelsea, Derby and other important manufactories. Large covered vessels combining sculptural modelling with armorial decoration are among the more substantial expressions of this production.

Excellent antique condition, with a small chip to the inner seating rim beneath the cover; otherwise the vase is in excellent condition. Examined under UV light.
