Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Carved melon feet beneath the platform base: cabinet work before machine carving.
Acanthus foliage on the turned stem: hand-carved relief with crisp definition.
Swivel top opening to an internal well: traditional games table mechanics.
Book-matched flame veneers across the frieze: dense timber with rich natural figure.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century William IV card and console table uses dark brown figured mahogany timbers with crossbanded details. The fold-over swivel top rests upon a shaped frieze above a central pedestal column with acanthus leaf carving and gadrooned rim details. The concave platform base sits on reeded bun feet. Visual elements include distinct wood grain patterns, turned collar mouldings on the pedestal, and vertical carved ribbing on the feet. Measuring 73.5 cm high, 91.5 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this piece functions well beside the front door or in a hallway as a console surface, or opened in a living room for card games and entertaining.

FAQs

Produced between 1830 and 1837, William IV furniture bridges the transition between classical Regency elegance and heavier Victorian proportions. Designs frequently feature robust scrollwork, rich wood veneers, carved acanthus leaves, and substantial turned or pedestal bases.

Card tables from this era were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or rosewood frame components layered with highly figured timber veneers. Internal playing surfaces were typically lined with wool felt or baize, while brass hardware secured the fold-over swivel tops.

Authentic pieces feature period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on internal frame members, heavy castors concealed beneath carved feet, and bold sculptural details including lotus leaves or gadrooning along the frieze and base.

When closed, these tables function as compact hall consoles, ideal beneath a large framed mirror or artwork in an entryway. They can also be opened as occasional accent tables in living spaces to showcase ceramics or table lamps.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or colour fading.
