Description

This is just my favourite type of salt....it does have everything going for it....the turning is of the highest quality....note the very fine "discus" central knop.....the choice of wood being yew , has given it a superb natural colour...with a very attractive figuring to the wood....it stands on a slightly raised base which all results in a very pleasing overall conformation...decorated with double incised ring decoration...hard to find better..!

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Fine concentric lathe ridges under base: early hand-lathe turning.
Incised double line decoration around the bowl: typical late eighteenth-century detail.
Soft mellow wax finish over tight grain: centuries of gentle handling.

This Georgian treen salt cellar is crafted from solid yew wood with a polished finish and displays a warm brown colour with rich wood figuring and natural grain patterns. The turned profile includes a deep bowl-shaped top with double incised ring decoration, supported by a fine discus central knop and a raised circular stepped pedestal base. The piece shows smooth turned surfaces with visible timber growth rings on the interior base and underside. Practical dimensions are 7 cm high, 8.3 cm wide, and 8.3 cm deep. Today, this antique salt would sit gracefully on a sideboard top or display shelf in an English country house interior, serving as a decorative small container or tabletop accent. It brings authentic late eighteenth-century style to a traditional dining room, living area, or collector's display space without requiring active functional use.

FAQs

Treen refers to small, handmade wooden functional objects crafted prior to the widespread adoption of metal, ceramic, and glass alternatives. Historically produced by local turners, treen includes everyday household items such as salt cellars, bowls, platters, and snuff boxes.

Treen items should be kept in stable humidity environments away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Periodic application of natural beeswax polish maintains the timber surface and protects the underlying grain structure.

Small turned treen objects function well as decorative accents displayed on sideboard tops, open kitchen shelving, or arranged within shallow glass vitrines alongside other historic wooden artefacts.

Authentic 18th-century treen displays subtle irregularities consistent with hand-lathe turning, natural shrinkage across the grain over time, and a rich surface patina developed from centuries of handling and wax application.

Georgian treen salts were commonly turned from dense, fine-grained native European timbers. Yew wood, boxwood, walnut, and fruitwoods like plum or apple were preferred for their durability and attractive natural grain pattern.
