18th century

Description

Antique Chinese Blue & White Porcelain Lobed Bowl – Kangxi Period c.1700

Brief Description:

A beautiful and particularly interesting antique Chinese blue and white porcelain bowl, believed to date from the Kangxi period (1662–1722), circa 1700.

Of attractive shallow form, the bowl features an elegant lobed or petal-shaped rim and is extensively hand-painted in varying shades of underglaze cobalt blue.

The central reserve depicts a wonderfully atmospheric traditional Chinese waterside landscape, incorporating trees, rocks, water and architectural/figural elements, executed with the fluid and spontaneous brushwork so characteristic of early Chinese blue and white porcelain.

Surrounding the central scene is a particularly decorative series of alternating shaped panels containing flowers, precious objects and traditional symbolic motifs, creating an almost segmented or radiating design around the interior.

The exterior is equally interesting, decorated with bold circular motifs separated by freely painted vertical devices, while the underside incorporates a neatly formed circular footrim.

With an underglaze-blue character mark to the underside.

The use of earlier reign marks upon later Chinese porcelain was an established tradition and is particularly associated with wares produced during the Kangxi period.

The combination of the lobed form, panelled decoration, cobalt palette, freely executed brushwork, foot construction and apocryphal mark suggests a likely late 17th to early 18th-century date.

A charming piece of early Chinese blue and white porcelain, with considerably more character and individuality than later mass-produced examples.

Its relatively small proportions also make it particularly easy to display within a collection of Chinese porcelain, Oriental works of art or early ceramics.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (16621722), this style is distinguished by refined translucent white porcelain decorated with vibrant sapphire-blue cobalt underglaze, featuring precise brushwork, panelled reserves, and naturalistic landscape scenes.

These pieces were crafted using refined kaolin clay and petuntse stone, hand-painted with cobalt oxide pigment, covered in a clear glaze, and fired at high temperatures in specialized wood-burning kilns.

Key identification factors include distinct graduation in the cobalt blue tones, a smooth translucent glaze with a slight greenish-blue tint, a cleanly finished foot ring, and subtle operational wear consistent with early 18th-century origin.

Blue and white porcelain bowls function effectively as decorative focal points when displayed on a sideboard top, mounted inside framed cabinetry, or positioned on a carved timber display stand.

Washing should be performed by hand using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent, avoiding soak time, harsh chemicals, or exposure to sudden thermal changes.
