Description

A good Caughley porcelain leaf shape pickle dish decorated with the ever popular "fisherman" / "pleasure boat" pattern, c.1780-1795. Moulded leaf vein detail to the underside and serrated edge. Unmarked.

Reference: Caughley & Worcester Porcelains by Godden, plate 138.

It measures 9.1cm (3 5/8") wide, 9cm (3 1/2") long and 2.5cm (1") high.

Condition is excellent with no damage or restoration, unusually no chips to the rim. Slight wear to the glaze along the rim in the bottom right hand corner. Minimal handling wear otherwise. There is a very small glaze fault just to the left of the fisherman.

A Caughley leaf-shaped pickle dish is a small soft-paste porcelain serving vessel produced at the Caughley manufactory in Shropshire during the late 18th century. Moulded in the shape of a leaf with serrated edges, these dishes were typically decorated with underglaze blue transfer-printed or hand-painted patterns inspired by Chinese export ceramics.

During the Georgian period, English manufactories produced pickle dishes using soft-paste porcelain clay containing soaprock or bone ash to improve translucency. The vessels were press-moulded into naturalistic leaf forms, fired, decorated with cobalt oxide underglaze prints or freehand painting, and subsequently glazed and fired a second time.

Authentic Caughley soft-paste porcelain displays a characteristic bluish-green translucency when held to a strong light source. Look for crisp transfer printing in deep cobalt blue, distinctive leaf-moulding details, and period-correct factory marks such as an impressed or underglaze blue S or C, though un-marked pieces are also common.
