Named after Andre-Charles Boulle, master cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV, Boulle work is a decorative technique combining tortoiseshell and cut brass or copper marquetry set into an ebonised timber frame.

Traditional Boulle tables feature brass inlay, tortoiseshell veneer, ebonised timber cores, and cast gilded bronze (ormolu) mounts designed to protect edges and add structural ornament.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit hand-cut brass patterns recessed into tortoiseshell, solid oak or pine carcass construction beneath ebonised surfaces, and heavy bronze mounts fixed with countersunk screws.
