A lovely small Bow porcelain sauceboat, of fluted shape, beautifully hand painted with floral sprays. A feathered pink border runs inside the rim and there is a small floral sprig inside the base. Unmarked, c.1765.

It measures 12.8cm (5") long by 5.8cm (2 1/4") wide and 5.8cm (2 1/4") high.

In very good condition; it has a very small filled chip to the spout which is minimally noticeable. A tiny slither chip under the foot and two tiny glaze frits, one to the side of the foot and one to the rim. Two small spots of discolouration to the rim. Minimal handling wear.

The Bow porcelain factory, established in East London in the 1740s, was one of Englands earliest producers of soft-paste porcelain. During the mid-to-late 18th century, they manufactured utilitarian and decorative tableware, including fluted sauce boats designed to accommodate formal dining customs of the Georgian era.

Early English soft-paste porcelain was typically crafted using a mixture of white clay, crushed glass frit, and bone ash to mimic Chinese hard-paste porcelain. Pieces were fired at lower temperatures, glazed, and subsequently decorated with hand-painted enamel colours.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit a characteristic warm translucency, slight manufacturing irregularities such as firing specks, hand-painted details, and unglazed foot rims. Weight, bone ash composition, and period-appropriate enamel pigments also help verify authenticity.

Individual pieces of antique porcelain can be displayed on glass-fronted cabinets, dressers, or sideboards alongside minimalist glass and ceramics to create a curated contrast. Grouping small ceramic vessels on tray displays also highlights their form and hand-painted details.

Antique porcelain must be washed gently by hand in warm water using a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasives, or dishwashers. Sudden temperature shifts should be avoided to prevent thermal shock and crazing of the glaze.
