Gillows Style Georgian Sofa Table

Description

A lovely Georgian Mahogany Sofa Table, possibly by Gillows, as it is not stamped we can only put ‘style’ but the leg is so fine and a classic Gillows leg that there is a strong possibility. Having 2 drawers to the front and flaps at either end that lift up with 2 swing out supports under. Lovely original warm colour, nice original brass casters and in overall excellent original condition for the home.

Originating in the late eighteenth century, Georgian sofa tables were designed to sit directly behind a sofa. Key characteristics include a long, narrow top, two hinged drop leaves at the short ends, shallow drawers along one side, and slender turned or reeded legs.

High-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany was the primary timber chosen for construction due to its fine grain and rich natural colour. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, complemented by solid brass drop handles and castors.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass castors, and natural wear patterns beneath the frame and around the feet. The underside usually shows hand-sawn timber marks and oxidation consistent with age.
