Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian style sofa table is made from dark brown mahogany with a warm timber finish. The piece takes the form of a rectangular table top flanked by drop leaves on either side, supported underneath by two swing-out wooden supports. The front apron incorporates two drawers fitted with round brass ring pulls. Below, the four reeded legs are heavily turned with ring details, terminating in small brass castors. Subtle decorative moulding runs along the perimeter of the top surface. Measuring 71.5 cm high by 129 cm wide with the flaps up, and 56 cm deep, the table sits compactly behind a sofa or against a living room wall. It functions well as a display surface or a small writing desk in a sitting room, drawing room, or hallway.

FAQs

Originating in the late eighteenth century, Georgian sofa tables were designed to sit directly behind a sofa. Key characteristics include a long, narrow top, two hinged drop leaves at the short ends, shallow drawers along one side, and slender turned or reeded legs.

High-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany was the primary timber chosen for construction due to its fine grain and rich natural colour. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, complemented by solid brass drop handles and castors.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass castors, and natural wear patterns beneath the frame and around the feet. The underside usually shows hand-sawn timber marks and oxidation consistent with age.

Place the table against the reverse side of a central living room sofa or along a hallway wall to function as a narrow console. The drop leaves can be extended when additional surface area is required for display or serving.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the timber patina. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage, joint loosening, or colour fading.
