Antique 20th century Edwardian side table in mahogany, a beautifully proportioned piece with an elegant shape and plenty of traditional character. Well made and of good quality, the attractive detailing gives it a refined appearance while remaining simple and versatile.

Edwardian side tables, dating from 1901 to 1910, are characterized by lighter proportions than preceding Victorian pieces. They frequently feature delicate cabriole legs, Art Nouveau influence, carved corner brackets, and additional lower shelves.

Solid mahogany was the primary timber utilized for Edwardian occasional tables due to its deep colour and fine grain. Construction involved hand-carved aprons, mortise and tenon joinery, and a polished shellac or wax finish.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wear patterns on the feet and lower shelf, hand-cut joinery, and depth in the wood patina. Genuine mahogany from this era displays fine vertical graining and slight variations in colour from historic polishing.

Position the table beside a sofa or modern armchair to create visual contrast between contemporary upholstery and dark timber. Use the top surface for lighting or functional items while placing books or ceramics on the lower shelf.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or fading. Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year.
