Antique George III Mahogany Tilt-top Tripod Table C.1780

Description

A charming solid mahogany Georgian tripod wine table, the circular richly figured tilt-top set over a turned stem, all raised on a sweeping tripod base of cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet.

The timber retains a rich, glowing patina with over two centuries of honest domestic character, complemented by historic, long-stabilised repairs around the leg junctions and a top that remains remarkably level and firm when locked flat.

Very good antique condition, with lots of beautiful surface wear and solid historic repairs to the base. Structurally sound, stable and ready to place in the home.

A George III tilt-top tripod table is an 18th-century accent table designed during the reign of King George III in Britain. It features a circular top mounted on a hinged catch, allowing the surface to tilt vertically when supported by a central turned pedestal and three splayed legs.

These tables were primarily crafted from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany using traditional joinery methods. The central pillar is turned on a lathe, while the three legs are joined to the base of the stem via hand-cut dovetail joints, often reinforced with an iron underside plate.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved dovetail joints where the legs meet the central column, original brass or wrought iron snap-catch latches beneath the top, and natural timber shrinkage leading to slightly oval shaped tops over time.
