Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this Dunhill Unique Petrol Lighter to the 1920s.

The dimensions and construction correspond closely with documented early Unique B pocket lighters.
A particularly interesting feature is the early straight-arm mechanism. Instead of the broad, flat snuffer arm seen on most surviving Dunhill Unique lighters, this example has a slender straight bar terminating in a compact cylindrical wick snuffer. This distinctive early construction is an important detail for the specialist collector.

Lifting the arm uncovers the wick, while the horizontal single striker wheel produces a strong spark. Lowering the arm closes the snuffer over the wick and extinguishes the flame.
The underside is marked "PAT. No. 143752", and the filler cap is signed "DUNHILL UNIQUE LIGHTER".

After many years in storage, the lighter was recently filled with petrol and fitted with a new flint. It worked immediately and produces a beautiful, steady and even flame, as shown in the photographs.

Very good antique condition. The lighter is clean and appears only lightly used, with crisp engine turning and a well-preserved gold finish. Minor surface marks and small areas of age-related patina are consistent with its approximately 100-year age.
