Description

This stylish wooden gallery tray which has a beautiful octagonal shape has a rounded edge, silver plated gallery rail and fittings marked with EPNS, silver plate and wooden handles and sits on four round bun feet.

This antique tray which dates from c1900 has a central shell inlay, is a nice quality and large tray and is a heavy weight.

A very nice antique piece that not only looks great with it's wonderful design but is also perfect for using as a cocktail or drinks tray.

Material: Wood. Silver plate.

Date: c1900.

Marked: E P N S.

Dimensions: Length including handles: 54.5 cm (21 1/2"). Width: 37.5 cm (14 3/4"). Height to top of handles: 8 cm (3").

Weight: 2.49 kg.

Condition: Excellent antique condition with light signs of use in keeping with age. Some light surface scratches, light wear and a few marks. Please see pictures.

A gallery tray features a raised border or rail around the perimeter designed to prevent items, such as tea sets or glassware, from sliding off during service. These functional and decorative pieces became prominent during the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Traditional gallery trays were built with fine cabinet timbers like mahogany or satinwood, decorated with contrast wood marquetry and stringing. The surrounding metal galleries were typically electroplated nickel silver, secured directly to the wooden body with metal fastenings.
