Georgian Horse Head Armorial Intaglio Desk Seal C.1770-1800 Scottish Interest

18th century
Description

Georgian Horse Head Armorial Intaglio Desk Seal c.1770-1800 Scottish Interest

A rare late Georgian armorial desk seal dating to the late eighteenth century, circa 1770-1800, modelled as a bridled horse head.

Finely formed in copper alloy, probably brass, the horse displays raised ears, an expressive open mouth, detailed eyes and nostrils, bridle, bit and an incised mane.

The neck rises above a circular collar and waisted stepped base terminating in an engraved intaglio matrix.

The matrix contains two shield shaped cartouches beneath elaborate heraldic and foliate ornament.

Traditional Association

The seal is traditionally associated by repute with the Abercromby family of Tullibody, Scotland, and historically linked with Lieutenant General Sir Ralph Abercromby KB, 1734-1801.

Sir Ralph was the son and heir of George Abercromby of Tullibody and married Mary Anne Menzies of Ferntower in 1767.

Current heraldic research has not established a conclusive match between the matrix and the recorded Tullibody arms. The specific Sir Ralph attribution therefore remains unverified.

Date

Late eighteenth century, circa 1770-1800, provisional.

Material

Copper alloy, probably brass.

Provenance

By repute from a private Scottish estate.

Subsequently with a Scottish antiques dealer.

Thereafter in the collection and inventory of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.

Dimensions

7 cm high x 5.5 cm long x 2.6 cm wide.

Weight approximately 180 grams.

Condition Report

Good antique condition with attractive historic patina, rubbing, scratches and darker oxidation.

The matrix retains old deposits and reddish and greenish traces within the engraved recesses. Expected wear is present around the matrix edge and raised areas of the horse.

These deposits have not been definitively identified as sealing wax and may include historic sealing material, corrosion products or accumulated deposits.

Shipping

Worldwide shipping is available.

Owing to the compact dimensions and substantial solid construction of the desk seal, it will be professionally packaged using appropriate protective materials and dispatched fully insured.

International buyers are welcome. Please contact us for a destination specific delivery quotation or to discuss any particular shipping requirements.

Certificate of Sale and Dealer Attribution

The artwork will be supplied with a Certificate of Sale and Dealer Attribution issued by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD, recording the artworks catalogue details, attribution, provenance as stated, and details of the sale. Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian desk seal is a personal desktop instrument from the 18th or early 19th century used to impress a crest, monogram, or armorial design into hot wax to secure and authenticate correspondence.

Desk seals of the 18th century were commonly cast from brass, bronze, silver, or gold, occasionally featuring carved gemstone intaglios such as agate, carnelian, or bloodstone set into the base.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved or hand-engraved matrix details showing fine surface wear, a natural aged patina within the crevices, and traditional casting or hand-chased construction marks.

An antique seal can be displayed as a decorative accent atop an office desk, arranged alongside leather-bound books, or integrated into a curated tray of desktop curiosities.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that remove historic patina; light application of microcrystalline wax preserves the metal surface from oxidisation.
