Antique Industrial Wicker Traveling Trunk with Internal Linen Tray by J. Jackson

Overview

An exceptional and rare late Victorian / early Edwardian woven wicker traveling trunk, dating to circa 1895–1915. Hand-crafted in the historic textile heartland of West Yorkshire, England, this heavy-duty industrial chest retains its highly sought-after original internal lift-out linen tray and its bold, crisp manufacturer’s stamp. Equal parts practical storage and striking decorative statement, this piece is a beautiful example of British industrial heritage that functions perfectly in a modern interior as a unique blanket chest, laundry trunk, or rustic coffee table. it is much more robust than the average trunk having heavy metal rods and bindings to the top and sides

Historical Provenance

The interior of the lid features a wonderfully preserved, vivid blue oval maker's stamp reading:“J. Jackson, Basket, Skip & Hamper Maker, 37 George Street, Leeds Road, Bradford.”The exterior is further enhanced by hand-painted black stenciled initials ("R.H / BR"), providing authentic industrial character from its days moving textiles through the West Yorkshire mill trades.

Dimensions Width: 80 cm (31.5 in)Depth: 56 cm (22.0 in)Height: 60 cm (23.6 in).Condition Report Overall: Good antique condition, structurally sound, and full of rich historic patina. Wicker & Interior: The willow weave is robust, though it displays minor, wear to the high-impact corners and lid rim edges. The internal canvas lining is completely intact and securely stitched, holding the original wooden horizontal structural rods in place. The highly collectible internal lift-out tray remains in excellent, usable condition. Hardware: The original iron strap hinges and long front locking bar are fully intact and firmly attached, showing a heavy, authentic surface rust and oxidation that beautifully underscores its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, large woven wicker hampers and trunks were widely used for industrial transport, railway luggage, and commercial storage due to their lightweight yet durable nature.

These pieces were typically crafted using woven willow, rattan, or cane wrapped around a solid timber base or metal framework, often reinforced with iron banding and leather straps for added strength.

Authentic examples often feature hand-woven construction, original iron or brass latches, wooden runners on the base, and original black stencilled lettering or numbering used for commercial tracking.

A large wicker trunk functions exceptionally well as a distinctive coffee table, a foot-of-bed storage chest, or an oversized log basket beside a hearth to add texture and warmth.

Dust regularly using a soft brush or vacuum with a bristle attachment, and keep the piece in a dry environment away from direct heat sources to prevent the natural fibres from drying out and snapping.
