Staffordshire dogs are decorative ceramic pottery figures originating from Staffordshire, England, produced primarily during the nineteenth century. Traditionally manufactured in facing pairs, these earthenware ornaments were designed to be displayed on fireplace mantels in Victorian homes.

These figurines were press-moulded from earthenware or porcelain pottery, coated in a white lead glaze, and decorated by hand using ceramic enamels. Details such as coat markings and collars were applied with overglaze pigments and occasional gilded highlights.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature hollow interiors with small release holes, press-moulded seams, and slight hand-painted variations between the left and right figures. Genuine period examples often display natural glaze crazing and soft wear to the gilded collars and lockets.

Position the pair facing inwards on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table to maintain symmetry. Combining ceramic historical figures with clean-lined modern ceramics or abstract framed artwork creates an engaging interior contrast.
