This Edwardian envelope card table is an 1890 piece of antique furniture designed for a gentleman's library or an empty corner of a home today. Constructed from rich brown mahogany with satinwood, it shows marquetry floral inlay on four triangular folding top leaves, a frieze drawer with brass handles, and square tapered legs. The timber surfaces display natural variations in tone, polished brass hardware with round handles, and visible wood grain beneath a warm finish. The structural form includes four delicate tapering legs ending in shaped feet, brass hinges along the table top edges, and a single lower drawer panel with decorative stringing. Measuring 76 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, the table fits neatly into domestic interiors as a decorative accent or functional surface. It works well placed against a wall or in a quiet room, serving equally as a display stand or an occasional table for daily use.

FAQs

An envelope card table is a compact gaming table developed in late nineteenth-century Britain. It features four triangular triangular-hinged top leaves that rotate on a central pivot and open outward like an envelope to create a larger square playing surface.

These tables were primarily constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, frequently decorated with satinwood, boxwood, or brass inlays. The interior playing surface was typically lined with baize or felt, and single frieze drawers were incorporated to hold playing cards and counters.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the frieze drawers, original brass handle fittings, and a smooth swivel mechanism for the folding top. Natural wear on the timber underside, light surface oxidation on metal parts, and original baize remnants indicate age.

When closed, the table serves as a compact accent piece ideal for an entryway, hallway, or empty corner. It can support table lamps or small decorative objects, and can be converted easily into an active surface for board games or reading when opened.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent shrinking, cracking, or fading of the inlaid veneers. Clean surfaces using a soft cloth, and apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish along the grain annually to maintain the protective finish.
