Antique Gothic Revival Oak Welsh Chapel Altar Table

1920 - 1940
Description

A particularly attractive antique oak altar or communion table of Welsh chapel origin, with extensive Gothic Revival detailing. The table has a substantial rectangular oak top above a beautifully carved frieze, incorporating Gothic tracery, quatrefoil and foliate details. The front is centred by a panel of figured oak and flanked by pierced Gothic arches, with further matching tracery continuing around the sides. Carved across the front is the Welsh inscription:

“GWNEWCH HYN ER CÔF AMDANAF”

meaning “Do this in remembrance of me”, the Welsh wording of the instruction at the Last Supper and particularly appropriate to its original use as a communion table. Raised on substantial square legs united by stretchers, the table has a lovely warm golden oak colour and is an impressive example of Welsh ecclesiastical furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries draws inspiration from medieval architecture, incorporating features such as pointed arches, tracery, carved inscriptions, and trefoil motifs commonly found in churches and chapels.

Solid oak was the predominant timber used in British church furniture due to its durability and dense grain, often assembled using traditional mortise and tenon joinery to withstand heavy usage.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hand-carved decorative detailing, period-appropriate timber patination, traditional joinery construction, and sometimes localized inscriptions or regional maker characteristics.

These structural tables serve as console tables in spacious entrance halls or behind large sofas, paired with minimalist contemporary lighting or neutral ceramic decorative objects to balance the heavy wood carving.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and protect the carved detailing from dust accumulation.
