Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This antique French bureau plat desk from around the 1890 period is made from kingwood, walnut, ormolu and brass in a warm brown tone with parquetry inlay, cabriole legs, ormolu mascaron mounts and serpentine moulding. The piece displays a diamond-pattern inlaid wood top with serpentine edges and a brass rim, a single drawer on the front with ormolu mounts, and delicate cast metal mounts at the knees of the curved legs. It stands 76 cm high, 81 cm wide and 58 cm deep. Suitable as a freestanding item in a home today, it functions well as a compact writing desk or a decorative side table in a study, drawing room or hallway. The polished timber surface and ornate metal details complement traditional and period-inspired interiors.

FAQs

A bureau plat is a flat-topped writing table originating in 17th-century France, characterised by a single tier of drawers beneath a flat surface and supported by cabriole or tapered legs.

Traditional construction features hardwood frames veneered with exotic woods such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood in geometric parquetry patterns, accented by cast bronze ormolu mounts.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut marquetry or parquetry veneers, hand-chased gilt bronze mounts with casting marks, and traditional dovetail joinery within the drawer construction.

Position the table as a freestanding desk in a study or as a focal side table behind a sofa, pairing its intricate woodwork with contemporary lighting or neutral decor.

Dust regularly with a dry soft cloth, avoid direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, and clean metal mounts without harsh chemical polishes.
