Meissen was the first European factory to discover hard-paste porcelain in the early 18th century, with avian sculptures becoming a trademark specialty under master modeller Johann Joachim Kandler. These detailed figures gained popularity across European royalty and nobility as symbols of status and naturalistic art.

Pieces were cast from hard-paste porcelain clay containing kaolin, petuntse, and quartz, fired at high temperatures to create a dense, vitrified body. They were subsequently hand-painted with overglaze polychrome enamels and fired a second time at lower temperatures to fix the pigments.

Authentic Meissen features the famous hand-painted underglaze blue crossed swords mark on the base, which varied subtly by era. Additionally, authentic pieces display exceptionally fine hand-painted plumage details, precise anatomical Modelling, and sharp detail along pressed mold lines.
