Meissen began producing porcelain bird figurines in the early 18th century after discovering hard-paste porcelain production in Europe. Master modeller Johann Joachim Kandler established many iconic avian forms, creating detailed wildlife sculptures that remained popular through the 19th century.

These figures were produced using kaolin-based hard-paste porcelain, cast in individual moulds and assembled by hand. After an initial firing, artisans applied hand-painted overglaze polychrome enamels before firing the pieces again at a lower temperature.

Authentic pieces feature the underglaze blue crossed swords mark on the underside, often accompanied by impressed model numbers and painter marks. Authentic 19th-century examples display fine moulding, crisp detail, and high-quality enamel work.

Display these colourful figures on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or on top of a stack of art books on a console table. Their vibrant hues make them effective decorative focal points in both classic and eclectic interiors.
