Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A snuff mull is a specialised container used for storing ground tobacco, originating in Scotland during the seventeenth century. The term mull derives from the Scottish word for a mill, referencing the process of grinding tobacco leaves into fine powder. These vessels became prominent social accessories and ceremonial gifts throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Scottish snuff mulls were traditionally crafted from animal horn, particularly ram or cattle horn, which was heated and shaped to form a curved vessel. The opening was typically fitted with sterling silver or electroplated nickel mounts, often featuring hinged lids set with native Scottish stones such as banded agates, cairngorms, or amethysts.

Authentic pieces display natural variation and faint growth grain in the horn material, along with period-appropriate metalwork showing hand-engraving or cast scalloped rims. Look for silver hallmarks or makers marks on the rim mount, alongside authentic age-related wear around the hinge mechanism and interior chamber where tobacco was stored.

Small antique collectables like snuff mulls serve as rich decorative accents on an executive desk, a brass tray, or styled within a bookshelf vignette. They are frequently incorporated into curated curiosity cabinets or placed atop stacked art books to add texture, history, and sculptural interest to modern study spaces.

Keep the horn away from direct heat, high humidity, and sunlight to prevent drying, warping, or cracking. Clean the horn gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and apply a small amount of silver polishing paste strictly to the metal mounts using a cotton swab, taking care to avoid contact with the natural horn and stone inlay.
