This large nineteenth-century Swedish painted supper table belongs to the Scandinavian country style, standing 76 cm high and 108 cm wide. Constructed from pine and painted wood, the piece displays a dark charcoal distressed finish with visible signs of age across its circular tabletop. Below the top sits a turned baluster pedestal rising from shaped tripod legs featuring decorative carvings along their profiles. Ideal for everyday use as a dining table or centre table in a kitchen or living space, the piece brings a rustic farmhouse character to contemporary interiors. The dark painted timber blends easily with traditional and modern room schemes alike while providing a practical surface for daily gatherings.

Originating in eighteenth-century Scandinavia, supper tables were designed as versatile, movable pieces used for light meals, tea, or card games. Often featuring tilt-top mechanisms or compact round tops, they allowed flexible social dining in smaller living spaces.

Scandinavians primarily crafted provincial furniture using native softwoods, such as pine and birch. These pieces were typically assembled using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery and finished with milk paint or oil-based pigments.

Authentic pieces generally display layered paint wear around high-contact areas like the table edge and base. Structural indicators include hand-planed undersides, iron hardware with natural oxidisation, and wood shrinkage consistent with age.

These tables function effectively as focal points in an entryway, as breakfast tables in a kitchen nook, or as occasional tables paired with contemporary seating. The muted, distressed paint surface contrasts well with minimalist and modern neutral interiors.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and avoid moisture or harsh chemical cleaners that can lift historic paint layers. To preserve the original patina, apply a clear paste wax sparingly once or twice a year.
