Vintage Mid 20th Century Batik Textile Art Poinsettia Floral Framed Panel

1940 - 1960
Description

Type of Artwork: A very attractive vintage batik textile panel, depicting two large poinsettia flowers amongst stylised foliage against a wonderfully muted green ground. The design has been produced on woven fabric using the traditional wax-resist batik technique, with characteristic fine crackling running throughout the dyed surface. The palette is particularly appealing, combining faded crimson red, ochre, cream, olive and blue-green tones. The natural variations within the dye and extensive batik crackle give the piece a beautifully aged and individual appearance.

Presented in a simple dark-stained wooden frame which complements the colours extremely well.

The construction, frame and fittings appear consistent with some age. I believe the piece to be mid-20th century, although I have been unable to establish an exact date, maker or country of origin and therefore offer it simply as a vintage batik textile work. The reverse retains its old wooden backing, hanging rings and cord, together with several remnants of an old printed-paper backing or label.

Approximate Age of Artwork: Circa Mid 20th Century

Is the Artwork Framed or Mounted: Framed, as shown

Important notice regarding frames – please read carefully.

Items which are presented in frames are usually the old original frames which came with the artwork. We would typically only remove the frames if they were severely broken or damaged. In line with our conservation ethos, we believe that a painting should be sold within its original setting rather than re-presenting in a contemporary mount & frame unless necessary. Customers also prefer to choose their own way of presenting their painting or engraving. Frames therefore WILL have wear, discolouration or damage in line with their age.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request

Condition Report: Vintage condition with age-related wear. There are areas of fading, variation to the colouring, surface marks and several small scuffs/abrasions where the lighter fabric beneath is visible. The wooden frame also shows expected marks and wear from age and use.

The extensive fine dark crackling visible throughout the design is characteristic of the batik wax-resist process and forms part of the appearance of the work rather than being conventional cracking to a painted surface.

Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the condition description.

A very decorative piece of vintage textile art with lovely muted colours and considerable period character.

Please see photographs for full condition and details.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Batik is an ancient technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to cloth, historically practiced across Indonesia, East Asia, and West Africa before gaining widespread international popularity in mid-20th-century interior design.

Authentic batik art relies on natural plant-based fabrics such as cotton or silk, dyed using hot wax application, and typically mounted within a wooden picture frame for display.

Authentic batik displays fine crackle lines or veining where the hardened wax cracked during the dye process, allowing colour to seep through, and the dye usually penetrates fully to the reverse side of the natural fabric.

Framed textile art introduces organic texture to modern interiors and works effectively when hung above mid-century wooden sideboards, consoles, or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall.

Keep textile art out of direct sunlight to prevent UV fading of organic dyes, and display the piece in a climate-controlled room with low humidity to protect the natural fibres from moisture damage.
