Huge 19thc Italian Terracotta Wine Jar

Description

A HUGE at 4ft high 19thc Italian terracotta capasone or giara.

Finished in its distinctive half-dipped amber-ochre glaze and twin handles.

Traditionally crafted in regions , Puglia or Campania, these monumental vessels were used to ferment, store, and transport local olive oil or wine.

Comprising of terracotta body with raised structural ribs and a rich, dripped lead glaze at the shoulder and rim that protected the contents from spilling or seeping.

In remarkably good condition with no damage or repairs and age appropriate signs of use and wear .

Suitable for interior or exterior display .
