Intended to be filled with liquid rather than hot coals. Possibly Scottish and inspired by French models, The Auld Alliance, that sort of thing.

The overall form is pretty typical with a hook at the top of the handle to hang on a wall when not in use. The detachable handle was perhaps to enable the owner to use the flask for warmth when travelling by coach?
