Staffordshire Pottery Figure of the Lion & the Lamb

Description

Staffordshire Pottery figure of The Peaceable Kingdom, The Lion & The Lamb circa C. 1840.

It was the lion tamer Van Ambrugh, who inspired the potters to create this piece. Van Ambrugh trained a lion to lie with the lamb as described in biblical texts.

Princess Victoria was so fascinated with his act that she watched the performance in Drury Lane on two occasions in 1836 before she was crowned.

The biblical reference comes from Isaiah 11:6, and reflect the period’s focus on peace and harmony.

Provenance: This piece comes from the esteemed collection of religious figures belonging to the late Stephen Duckworth (see label at the base).
