Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century gilded frames are characterised by timber bases covered in gesso and decorated with fine gold leaf or composition gilding. These frames frequently reflect revival styles of the era, such as Neoclassical or Rococo, featuring detailed, repetitive architectural mouldings.

These frames were typically constructed using pine or oak bases overlaid with sculpted timber or moulded gesso plaster. A ground layer of clay, known as bole, was applied beneath thin sheets of gold leaf to create depth and warmth.

Authentic period frames often exhibit natural age-related cracking in the gesso, known as craquelure, alongside subtle wear that reveals the reddish bole clay beneath the gold leaf. The reverse typically shows darkened, patinated wood and historic joining techniques.

A gilded frame can be displayed empty as an architectural wall accent or paired with contemporary artwork for a contrasting look. Positioning a substantial frame above a fireplace mantel or console table creates a defined focal point.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or damp cloths which can dissolve the gesso and strip the leaf. Position the frame away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent cracking.
