Antique Taxidermy Elephant Foot Stool

1900 - 1920
Description

A good quality taxidermy elephant foot dating from the late 19th / early 20th Century. It is a good large size and it has a suede covered top.

It is in very good condition for its age and displays well. The skin has a good colour and texture and the nails are in good order. There are of course signs of age and use and there are some minor holes above one nail (see photo) but due to the shape of the foot it is not really noticeable. There is some rubbing and wear to the suede top in places but no holes or tears. It has been lightly cleaned and is ready for use.

Height : 19” / 48cm

Top Diameter : 16” / 41cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the Victorian and Edwardian colonial eras, preserved elephant feet were routinely converted into utilitarian objects such as footstools, umbrella stands, or wastepaper baskets as trophies or natural history curios.

These items typically feature dried and preserved hide and toenails built around an internal wooden or stuffed support frame, topped with an upholstered seat made of suede, leather, or fabric.

Authentic period pieces feature timber framing, natural shrinkage lines on the hide, original hand-stitching on the upholstery, and evidence of historical taxidermy preparation methods rather than modern synthetic materials.

Taxidermy furniture is frequently incorporated into study spaces, libraries, or eclectic living rooms alongside dark timber furniture, leather armchairs, and brass accents to serve as a focal curiosity.

Keep the piece in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources, dusting the hide periodically with a dry soft brush while avoiding liquid cleaners.
